ANTHROPOCENE
The term simply describes the time during which humans have had a substantial impact on our planet. Causing significant global warming and other changes to land, environment, water organisms and atmosphere.
One million animals and plants face extinction- Humanity is eroding its own life -support system. Vertebrate population have declined by 60% in just four decades.
"Humans are the driving force behind the mass decline of species." (“Sustainability | Natural History Museum”)
The term Anthropocene was coined to consider the impact of the accelerated accumulation of greenhouse gases on climate and biodiversity, and the irreversible damage caused by the over-consumption of natural resources. (“Anthropocene: the vital challenges of a scientific debate - UNESCO”) But do we need to turn this into a new geological epoch? While the debate continues among scientists, solutions have yet to be found. We are, in effect, witnessing a collective form of denial – the result of a naive faith in progress, consumerist ideology and powerful economic lobbies.
