Close to 1200 trees are getting ready to dress Perth and Busselton in green during the Sustainable Fashion Festival.

We all loved playing under and climbing a big old tree when we were kids, but where are they now?

Perth has the lowest tree canopy in Australia and is rapidly losing 80 % of trees on private land as no protection currently exists to protect them like in any other capital cities across Australia. There is currently very little State planning policy and limited local planning policy, to stop felling of trees in backyards in Perth.

Trees are part of sustainable development if we want a liveable future and tree canopy can lower air temperature in urban areas by up to 10 C.

While Perth is facing a tree canopy crisis, Eco Fashion Week Australia’s efforts in sustainability expanded further intoUrban Greening Project with partnering Perth based plantnursery Tass1 Trees.

Eco Fashion Week Australia since its establishment does not allow traditional Gift bags during shows but instead gave away lifelong gift to attendees - a tube stock native tree ready to plant in backyards.

The project is proudly sponsored by Joe Tassone and Alexandra Brinkmann from Tass1 Trees nursery based in Middle Swan/Perth.

Joe said
“Tass1 Trees was established in 2003 specialising in fruiting plants. Growing our own food will bring us always a step further to sustainability. But not only fruiting plants are important, every plant that we can give a home will make our surroundings and our environment better. There will be close to 1200 tube stock plants for all the Sustainable Fashion enthusiasts from groundcovers to trees - a plant for every garden. Tass1 Trees is delighted to be part of this amazing project and wishes Eco Fashion Week Australia huge success and lots of visitors who will also enjoy their new plant”.

Growing trees will offer support to wildlife and gives us precious shade and cools down our city. Leafy cover from tree canopy provides environmental, social, psychological, and recreational benefits in our cities and towns, we are delighted to be able to improve our urban forest on private land with support of our sponsor Tass1 Trees and with help of all our Festival attendees during EFWA24 Sustainable Fashion Festival in Perth and Busselton. We will continue our newly set tradition until Perth achieves the greenest capital title of Australia. Said Dr. Zuhal Kuvan-Mills Festival Director of Eco Fashion Week Australia.

About Taz1 Trees - Tass 1 trees was established in 2002, where a small variety of fruit trees were produced. In 2014 a decision to relocate was necessary to expand both the varieties and the volume of trees produced. Now settled in Middle Swan I have been able to turn what was a labour of love, into a nursery producing 1000’s of plants per year. Tass 1 trees not only sell fruiting plants from all over the world, many of which are unusual, but also a wide range of ornamentals, natives, and exotics. Always trying to produce as many varieties as they can, some are purchased both locally and interstate.
