EFWA 2024 Interview with Team Member Claire Foote - Hair/Makeup Director

Can you share a little of your journey that led you to the UK to work in the hair/makeup industry?

I was born in Manchester, where I developed a keen interest in hair, beauty, and fashion from a young age. I secured my initial professional opportunity at Vidal Sassoon in Manchester.

In 2012, you established a beauty and wellness salon in Mandurah - Claire's Organic Hair. What led you to move to embrace a holistic approach and offer clients a non-toxic environment that focuses on eco-conscious beauty?

Informed by my sister, a leading biochemist, about the high toxicity levels in many hair industry products, I decided approximately ten years ago to realign my salon with brands that reflect my commitment to natural and eco-conscious principles. Consequently, I began searching for a holistic brand characterized by low-toxicity, organic integrity, eco-consciousness, and an unwavering dedication to being 100% cruelty-free.

In your salon you focus on organic and sustainable brands. How do you evaluate new products? What ingredients do you avoid? Which ones do you like to see included?

Following my sister Emma's revelation regarding the high levels of toxins in hair colour products, I enlisted her help to identify a brand that aligned with our stringent values. After approximately six months of meticulous research into various hair colour brands, she directed us towards Natulique, a family-run business from Denmark known for its commitment to low-toxicity and eco-friendly practices.

How did you connect with EFWA founder Zuhal, and what about this event aligned with your work?

We organized a Viking-themed fashion show in Perth and collaborated with Zuhal, who provided the attire for the models. Since then, we have partnered on numerous occasions, consistently achieving great synergy in our collaborations.

For EFWA 2024 you have stepped into the very demanding role of Hair/Makeup Director. For those who are unfamiliar, can you share about all that role requires of you?

Over the years, I have frequently undertaken the responsibility of ensuring that hair and makeup are organized logistically to guarantee that models are prepared promptly when needed. I am also fortunate to have established connections with numerous hairdressers in Perth who generously volunteer their time to assist backstage.

What do you most hope those attending this event, or following it online, take away - something they can apply to their lifestyles that will promote change?

I hope the main takeaway will be a heightened awareness that while the fashion industry is often unsustainable, it does not necessarily have to operate this way. My aim is to demonstrate that sustainable practices can indeed be integrated effectively within the industry and beyond

Is there anything else you'd like to share in closing?

It is a great honor for both myself and my team to be invited to collaborate with Zuhal and Eco Fashion Week. We are confident that this year's event will be the most successful yet.
